A binary LOB is a LOB that contains data that is not character-based, as opposed to a character LOB, or CLOB, which contains data that is in the character set of the database. LOB storage just means that the data item is stored as a single item in one place.

Despite its name, a LOB has none of the useful attributes of an object. In a database this opaque chunk is often called a BLOB, or binary large object. One approach is to store the nontraditional data as an opaque chunk of data and add metadata.

The complex service collaborative editing of multimedia documents has been selected in this work for its relationship with electronic publishing.Jim Melton, Stephen Buxton, in Querying XML, 2006 2.3.1 Metadata The final result of this task should be a new schema, completely addressed to the collaborative editing service. In this paper, we show the selection and adaptation of this schema to our needs and also the use we make of this information in the collaborative editing service. To help us in doing this identification, we have taken the metadata defined in Learning Object Metadata (LOM) as a starting point. We have also identified the metadata present in complex services and now we want to go a step further by identifying metadata present in content generated by a specific complex service, collaborative editing of multimedia documents. In this work we focused in controlling complex services with the help of a workflow for offering them through electronic commerce. Our main motivation for identifying the metadata present in a collaborative editing service was to offer it through electronic commerce, as we have previously done some work in the definition of electronic commerce of services.
